In most cases, my presence at the overlooks--especially at smaller and crowded ones--understandably made some of the people there act as if they were self-conscious about having their picture taken by a stranger. Often people who noticed me seemed to assume that they were obscuring my view of the landscape, so they would try to get out of my way. When I waved them off, telling them that they weren't in my way at all, they looked at me puzzled for a moment before returning to their activities.

They usually kept a suspicious eye on me for the rest of the time they were at the overlook, however. Danger often lurked nearby. My assignment on Venice for National Geographic was the exception. Nothing about Venice is unexplored. Every brick, every doorway, and every one of its bridges has been mapped and painted. Every photographer since the invention of the camera has lingered on those bridges and photographed gondolas and reflections on the canal water underneath. I made a few photographs of the reflections, but I was there to investigate the only unknown: Would Venice vanish underwater?

Those reflections held no clues.

Mac DeMarco - Chamber of Reflection

Late one night the phone rang in my hotel room. It was my brother: My mother had been hospitalized, and I should return home immediately.

My mother was a pioneer of her generation of women, escaping her small coal-mining hometown in Wyoming to travel the world with my dad, my two brothers, and me. Fearless and restless, she thought it only natural that I would want to become a pioneer in my own way, and stoked those flames through my entire life. Mom created and supported my wanderlust. I returned to Venice, but waves of grief would unexpectedly overtake me at the sight of lighted candles in a church or a funeral boat moving through the canals.

Moonlight or love songs Never out of date Hearts full of passion Jelousy and hate Woman needs man, and man must have his mate But no one can deny It's still the same old story A fight for love and glory A case of do or die The world will always welcome lovers As time goes by [interlude] Moonlight or love songs Never out of date Hearts full of passion Jelousy and hate Woman needs man, and man must have his mate But no one can deny You must remember this A kiss is still a kiss A sigh is just a sigh The fundamental things apply As time goes by [interlude] It's still the same old story A fight for love and glory A case of do or die The world will always welcome lovers As time goes by.

The great pretender. I almost lost my mind.

Me time. What does that even mean?

Smoke gets in your eyes. When a man loves a woman Give her everything that he has Trying to hold on to [your] precious love Baby, please don't leave me now When a man loves a woman [she can do no wrong [Tell her that he loves her] When the night, has come and the land is dark and the moon is the only light you see No I won't be afraid Oh I won't be afraid Just as long, as you stand by me So darling, darling, stand by me Oh, stand by me Oh, stand by me Oh my darling, darling stand by me [interlude] If the sky, that we look upon should just tumble and fall Or the mountain should crumble Into the sea.

I won't cry, I won't cry Oh I wouldn't shed a tear Just as long as you stand, stand by me So darling, darling, stand by me Oh, stand by me Oh my darling, darling stand, stand by me So darling, darling, stand by me Oh, stand by me Oh my darling, darling stand, stand by me. Love me tender, love me sweet Never let me go You have made my life complete and I love you so Love me tender, love me true All my dreams fulfill For my darling, I love you And I always will Love me tender, love me dear Tell me you are mine I'll be yours through all the years Till the end of time Love me tender, love me long Take me to your heart For its there, that I belong And we'll never part.

Love me tender, love me sweet Never let me go You have made my life complete and I love you so Love me tender, love me long Take me to your heart For its there, that I belong And we'll never part Love me tender, love me true All my dreams fulfill For my darling, I love you And I always will. Oh yes, I'm the great pretender Pretendin 'I'm doin' well My need is such I pretend too much I'm lonely but no one can tell Oh yes I'm the great pretender Just laughin and gay like a clown I seem to be What I'm not, you see.
